About the Boat License
Is a boating licence the same as a VMP?
Yes. VMP is the official term for the small craft operator’s certificate — the “boating licence.”
Do I need prior experience?
No, no prior experience is required. The course is suitable for complete beginners. During the course you will gain the practical skills needed to apply for the exam.
How much does it cost to issue the licence?
The administrative fee for the written exam is currently 500 CZK. This fee is paid separately to the relevant authority (State Navigation Authority) on the day of the exam.
How long does it take to get the licence?
It depends on the course date, how quickly you prepare, and exam availability. It’s usually possible to complete the whole process within approximately 60 days, often sooner.
Is the VMP licence valid abroad?
Yes, but it depends on the country and type of authorisation. With a Czech VMP licence you may navigate on inland waterways in the Czech Republic and in other countries where this authorisation is recognised (typically countries recognising the international ICC certificate). At sea you may navigate within a limited distance from the coast (up to 1 nautical mile), but only after completing the relevant “sea” theoretical exam module. We recommend always checking the specific requirements for each country in advance.
How long is the licence valid?
Validity depends on the holder’s age:
- Under 65: valid indefinitely
- 65–70: medical fitness certificate required (valid until age 70)
- Over 70: renewal required every 2 years
In the event of a change in personal details or an extension of authorisation, an update must be applied for.
What if the weather is bad?
The course runs in normal weather conditions (light rain is not a problem). If conditions would make it unsafe to run the course, we will notify you in advance and arrange an alternative date.
What should I bring to the course?
We recommend comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for the weather. You’ll be moving around on the boat, so wear something you feel comfortable and safe in.
Where does the course start, and where can I park?
The course starts at the Prague Náplavka embankment near the Railway Bridge. Parking is available nearby (paid zones); we recommend using public transport.
Will I actually steer the boat, or just watch?
Yes, you’ll be steering. The course runs in a small group (max. 6 people), so everyone gets plenty of time at the helm.
What if I struggle with the course?
The course is designed to be manageable even for complete beginners. The instructor guides you step by step and everything is practised at a relaxed pace.

When will I receive my skills verification certificate?
We submit the practical skills verification to the SPS system immediately after the course. You can then use it to register for the exam at the State Navigation Authority.
