The boating licence, officially the “small craft operator’s certificate” (VMP), is essentially a driving licence for boats.
If you want to operate a motor vessel on a river, reservoir, or in some cases at sea, you’ll need one.

What the Boat Licence Is and What It Authorises You to Do
The boat licence is a state-issued authorisation to operate small vessels.

It allows you to skipper:
- Motor vessels up to 20 m in length
- Vessels with no engine power restriction
- Sailing vessels with up to 20 m² of sail
- Vessels carrying a maximum of 12 persons
With the basic licence you may navigate:
- on Czech and European inland waterways
After completing the “sea” theoretical module, also:
- at sea within 1 nautical mile of the coast.
Requirements for the Boating Licence
- Minimum age: 16 years
- Medical fitness
- Practical skills verification
- Written exam at the State Navigation Authority (SPS)

How to Register for the boat licence Exam
Registration is handled through the State Navigation Authority.
For most categories you must first provide proof of practical skills verification, which you obtain through our course. Without it you cannot register for the exam.
You will need:
- Completed application for a navigation document
- Medical certificate (no older than 3 months)
- Passport-sized photograph
- Administrative fee of 500 CZK
You can also submit the application online via the State Navigation Authority website.
